Six North is the mental hospital that Craig checks himself into and must stay in for at least five days before he can be deemed ready to leave. During his stay at Six North Craig makes friends with people in the hospital such as Noelle and his roommate Muqtada.
Noelle is 15 just like Craig and is admitted for self-harm. By the end of the book Noelle is able to start recovering from her depression due to Craig liking her because or her personality and interests and not because she has a pretty face and a nice body.
It is unknown as to why Muqtada developed his mental illness, but and the end of the book he gets out of bed when Craig shows him kindness that he does get from any of the other patients or staff, by giving him a record of Egyptian music. I woke up into a nightmare.
It is obvious to Craig that his depression and anxiety is going to continue to get worse, which leads him to two options. Getting the help he needs or killing himself.
Everyone needs to read this book and see what its really like to have these life preventing illnesses. I especially liked the concentration on depression being an illness, the same as cancer or chicken pox. It's not just a person deciding 'oh hey, I want to be sad today', it's a chemical reaction and should be treated with the same care and dignity as any other. I think that people forget this so much and, especially with teenagers, blame other things or rule it off for you just being 'moody'.
Mental illness is not something to dismiss, it's life threatening, and this book showcases this in such an amazing way which needs to be shown more widely in every day life. Shortly before I finished the novel I discovered that Vizzini committed suicide himself: my heart sunk and I couldn't help but cry.
In a way I felt like I shouldn't have benefited from the book and that I shouldn't have enjoyed it. It just shows that depression has an effect which can stay with you for life and I hope that this book will continue to prevent such sad endings. Want to tell the world about a book you've read?
